Everything Everything – live at the BBC 6 Music Festival, Bristol – Feb. 12, 2016 – BBC 6 Music –

Everything Everything, live at the BBC 6 Music Festival in Bristol this past weekend. A band who’ve been getting critical raves and a lot of nominations for all sort of awards, including a Mercury Music Prize and an Ivor Novello Award.

Pretty good for a band I remember as struggling, non-stop touring and gigging to get the word out. So here they are, with album Number 3 (Get To Heaven) released and met by a lot of positive word-of-mouth and press acclaim all over the place.

One of the things about Everything Everything that has attracted audiences is the fact they can’t really be pinned down as to a genre they are most associated with. Although their Wikipedia page lists them as Indie/Art Rock/Electronic Rock, they are a lot more than that – and just figuring out what they are going to do next is part of their charm.

So it was only natural a band like that would fit like a glove with the proceedings in Bristol this past weekend. A delightful meeting between eclectic and hardcore – and further evidence we are getting further and further away from the mainstream as being a bellwether of musical taste than ever before.

I say that while I am keeping an eye on the Grammys this evening – and feeling more and more that the gap between the mainstream and everyone else is becoming too wide to bridge. I guess I feel the lack of diversity on the parts of major record labels and A&R Departments to be the culprit in all this – aided by a general lack of adventure and a reluctance to try on the parts of media; the fact that mainstream music has a propensity to recycle itself in perpetuity makes it not attractive or even interesting anymore.

All I know is – I felt hopeful and optimistic over the future of music while listening to the 6 Music Festival this past weekend – and I felt like I was visiting a strange and distant planet when I was watching the Grammys – same notes – same general people – a world of difference. Something has to change.

Or not.

In any event, have a listen to Everyting Everyting, and find out a little bit more about a band you can’t put your finger on.
