Beaux Arts Trio – Library Of Congress Concert – Feb. 17, 1984 – Part 2

A Historic concert this week. The legendary Beaux Arts Trio (Menahem Pressler, Piano – Isidore Cohen, violin – Bernard Greenhouse, cello) in live performance from The Coolidge Auditorium of the Library of Congress on February 17, 1984.

One of the great, and best known Chamber music ensembles, forming in 1955 and celebrating their 60th anniversary last year. With personnel changes over the years, they have continued with Pressler as the only remaining original member of the group.

This concert features the second phase of the group, with Cohen coming on in 1968.

Three works this week – starting with the Trio in G Major K. 564 by Mozart. Followed by the D Minor Trio of Anton Arensky. And the second half (bottom player) features a single work – Beethoven’s Archduke Trio in B-flat Major, op. 97.

The Beaux Arts Trio have recorded a prodigious amount over the years, and certainly these pieces are no strangers to the record catalogs. But there is always something about a live performance, without the benefit of re-takes or overdubs that makes a work seem fresh. And hearing an ensemble like the Beaux Arts live has always been an enjoyable and educational experience.

I always say this – and I mean it; if you’ve never heard the Beaux Arts Trio before, hit play and relax. For that matter, if you’re a newcomer to Chamber Music, this is a good place to start. As is the case, if you’re familiar, you don’t even need to be reading this – you are probably well into part one by now anyway.

Needless to say, if you’re familiar, a fan or know nothing about it – this definitely qualifies for Anti-Road Rage Wednesday music.

Sit back and enjoy.
