Historic concerts again this week with legends Karl Bohm, guest Conducting the New York Philharmonic and Maurizio Pollini, piano, in music of Beethoven, Mozart and Brahms during the 1978 special Pension Fund concert and the first broadcast of the 1978-1979 season of the New York Philharmonic.
Beginning with the Leonore Overture #3 of Beethoven. Followed by a performance of Mozart’s Piano Concerto #23, with Maurizio Pollini as soloist. After the intermission, the concert concludes with a performance of Brahms Symphony Number 2.
Karl Bohm, widely considered to be one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century was celebrated for his interpretations of Mozart and Wagner, with a career beginning in 1917. Not without controversy, Bohm nonetheless had many admirers and guest conducted the New York Philharmonic on several occasions over the years.
Maurizio Pollini has enjoyed a successful career since the early 1960s and international acclaim since the late 1960s. His numerous recordings for DGG since the early 1970s have been highly praised and have won awards and have furthered his already worldwide reputation. In 2002 DGG released a 13-CD set celebrating Pollini’s 60th birthday, which included many of his landmark performances of both standard repertoire and contemporary works, which Pollini has championed throughout his career.
This concert also marked the first of the 1978-1979 season for the New York Philharmonic and was broadcast worldwide.
Nothing earth-shattering or painful; just simple, straightforward music-making by one of the worlds great orchestras, featuring two of the most widely respected and legendary musicians in a concert whose aim was to raise money for the Orchestras retired members.
This definitely qualifies as Wednesday Anti-Road Rage music, and judging by the events of the day, something to grab on to, turn up, relax and not think about anything to.
