July 29, 1974 – As the Senate Judiciary Impeachment Hearings continued, and as each article of Impeachment was voted on, the initial fear, agony and sadness over passage of the first article evaporated and the other articles were quickly voted on. On this day it was voting on the Second Article; failing to uphold his oath of office, and to carry out his constitutional duty to see that the laws are faithfully executed.
Following the introduction, this broadcast, a regular feature during the Watergate Hearings, runs down the votes as the second article ends up being passed. The vote was 28-10 and the worst news for the White House was that 7 of the committee’s Republicans wound up voting for the majority in the impeachment of President Nixon. By all accounts, it wasn’t a good night for the President.
The Article, in charging the President failed to see the laws be faithfully executed also mentioned specific charges of attempts to misuse the Internal Revenue Service, improper Electronic surveillance, and an attempt to influence a court of law through the Ellsberg Psychiatrists office break-in and failure to act when he knew that his aides lied and illegally frustrated proper government investigations.
So the fifth day of hearings ended with voting on Article 2. The next day, Day 6 was to begin with arguments over Article 3 of the Impeachment vote, although it was also considered that other articles of Impeachment would be brought up for a vote on that day as well. Article 3 was regarding the obstruction of the Impeachment investigation by the House Judiciary Committee by failing to honor those 8 subpoenas for tapes and documents.
