August 7, 2000 – Smack in the middle of Convention season and Democrat Al Gore picked Senator Joe Lieberman as his running mate. The Connecticut Senator got the call earlier this day. Gore asked Lieberman to consider – Lieberman said he was honored and was heading to Nashville where the formal selection and presentation was slated to made at the Convention the following day. Insiders said Gore chose Lieberman because they shared the same opinions and that Gore considered Lieberman a trusted partner. Aides were quick to downplay reports that Gore made the choice as a way of distancing himself from President Clinton‘s recent behavior. Lieberman was highly critical of Clinton’s imbroglio’s which polls indicated still resonated with voters. Others went on to say that a Gore-Lieberman ticket was the way of the future; it represented the new guard, where the Bush-Cheney ticket represented the old guard in politics.

Whatever the outcome, the horserace was on.

Meanwhile, wild fires were raking across Montana, causing mass evacuations and bringing the number of destroyed homes to at least 100, and the amount of destroyed acreage climbed to over 100,000 with no end in sight.

Health and safety issues were making headlines today – the number of deaths over defective tires was raising to double what was originally thought, from the Firestone, ATX and Wilderness model tires. It may have been because of the numbers of complaints that the tires were shredding apart while driving. Officials were looking into whether or not the tires were faulty. And Seafood was rated Number 1 in the area of Food Poisoning in the U.S. Word was out to avoide raw shellfish, particularly from the Gulf Coast. In addition, customers were advised to purchase seafood only from reputable fish dealers and to make sure the fish has been kept cold. It was estimated there were some 75 million cases of Food Poisoning each year.

And the Hendrix family now have the rights to Jimi Hendrix.com as a UN arbitrator awarded the family the domain name as a worldwide effort to fight “cyber-squatting”, when people buy the names of the noteworthy and famous in the hopes of turning a hefty profit later on. Julia Roberts won back Julia Roberts.com – however Sting wasn’t so lucky – somebody else owned Sting.com.

And that’s a small slice of what happened, this August 7, 2000 as reported by The CBS World News Roundup: Late Edition.
