August 11, 1977 – it was a jubilant Mayor Abraham Beame of New York who was very pleased to announce that “the people of the City of New York can rest easy this morning, because of the fact that the Police have captured a man whom they believe to be The Son Of Sam”. Maybe Beame spoke to reporters a short while after Police reported to have arrested David Berkowitz on suspicion of being the killer who fatally shot six young people and wounded seven in little more than a year. Police said the key to finding 24 year-old Berkowitz, a Post Office employee living in Yonkers, was through his car; a 1971 Ford. They began checking cars ticketed near the Brooklyn site of the last Son of Sam murder. One ticket, for illegal parking at a fire hydrant led to Berkowitz. Police reported when they arrested Berkowitz the previous night, he did not resist -acted as if resigned to his fate and said “okay, you got me”. After conducting ballistic tests on the .44 caliber gun found in Berkowitz’ car, it offered conclusive proof Berkowitz killed Stacy Moskowitz, the Son of Sam’s most recent victim. His arrest ended one of the greatest manhunts ever conducted by New York City Police.
And there was other news – Secretary of State Cyrus Vance was busy in the Middle East, making stops in Jordan, Syria and Egypt to brief those leaders on his talks with Israeli officials in Jerusalem. According to U.S. officials, Arab leaders were now appearing ready to sign peace treaties with Israel at the conclusion of a successful Geneva Peace Conference. Word was transmitted to Israeli Prime Minister Begin by Secretary of State Vance, and it cheered the Israeli sufficiently that he called it “A great achievement”. Arab spokesmen said it didn’t necessarily mean the establishment of diplomatic relations – it just meant they were ready to sign.
And that’s a little of what went on, this August 11th 1977 as presented by The CBS World News Roundup.
