August 18, 1978 – From Capitol Hill, The House Assassination Committee Hearings temporarily wound up its hearings this day on James Earl Ray and his guilt in the murder of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King in 1968. The jury was still out on the credibility of the latest sensational evidence presented by the committee. Representative Samuel Divine read into the record a two week old interview with a Scotland Yard inspector who said that Ray admitted killing King after his arrest in Britain in 1968. Ray called the charge false, saying all the statements made were inaccurate. Ray’s attorney Mark Lane charged the Committee with deceit in not revealing the inspector, according to Lane, had been dismissed by Scotland Yard in disgrace. Further testimony from Ray was postponed until November while the Committee was to call on witnesses who appeared to undermine Ray’s alibi that he was at a service station at the time of the King shooting. One witness who claimed to have seen him there, later admitted he gave false testimony. And the Station owner said they saw no car matching the description of Ray’s at the time.

And Ben Abruzzo, captain of the Double Eagle II, the first balloon to cross the Atlantic 137 hours after taking off from Maine and landing in Paris, crew immediately set out to planning their next exploit; to circle the globe in 70 days. The historic crossing was the culmination and the 14th such attempt to cross the Atlantic by Balloon in almost a century – previous attempts were made by others, but none were successful and some crew members were never found.

And that’s a small slice of what went on, this August 18, 1978 as presented by The World Tonight from CBS Radio.
