Another historic concert this week. The San Francisco Symphony, conducted by then-Music Director Edo De Waart and featuring the legendary oboist Heinz Holliger in a concert of music by Bach, Bruno Maderna and Anton Bruckner – it was broadcast on August 21, 1982 and was the 19th concert from the 1982 series.
The concert begins with J.S. Bach’s Concerto for Oboe d’Amore and strings in A BWV 1055, followed by Oboe Concerto Number 3 by Bruno Maderna. The concert concludes with a performance of the Romantic Symphony (#4) by Anton Bruckner.
Holliger, one of the most popular and admired Oboists of the 20th century, has performed all over the world – as soloist and ensemble player. He is one of the most prolific of the commercially recorded Oboists, and one of the most popular among contemporary composers. His list of dedicated works by composers, including Olivier Messiaen, Luciano Berio, Elliott Carter, Frank Martin, Hans Werner Henze, Witold Lutosławski, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Krzysztof Penderecki, and Isang Yun) give conclusive proof of his artistic stature in the music world.
Edo de Waart, currently music director of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, chief conductor of the Royal Flemish Philharmonic, an Artistic Partner with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and music director of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. De Waart’s tenure with the San Francisco Symphony ran from 1977 to 1985, when he left to become Music director of the famed Minnesota Orchestra.
Another artist with a prolific recording career, De Waart has made award-winning recordings with such labels as Philips and orchestras such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, and San Francisco Symphony.
