Something of more recent vintage this weekend. A concert by the celebrated Orchestre National de France conducted by the Russian-Ossetian wünderkind, Tugan Sokhiev and featuring Truls Mork as cello soloist.
Three works in the program; all Russian. Starting with In The Steppes Of Central Asia by Borodin. It’s followed by the 2nd Cello Concerto of Shostakovich with the Norwegian cellist Truls Mork as soloist.
The concert ends with a performance of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherazade.

Tugan Sokhiev has gotten a reputation over the past several years as a much in-demand guest conductor. While Music Director of
Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse (ONCT) and orchestra he has now led for over a decade, he is also Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow and until the end of the 2015/16 season has served as Music Director of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. Busy schedule – busy conductor. In addition there are already plans afoot for the 2017/18 season which include performances at the Bolshoi Theatre, his conducting debut with The Boston Symphony Orchestra and return visits to The Berliner Philharmonic, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, and the NHK Symphony Orchestra.
Truls Mork has also had a busy schedule. Returning to Orchestre National de France and to the Czech Philharmonic after successful concerts with both orchestras. This season has also included the Grafenegg Festival and a tour of Switzerland, a performance at Carnegie Hall in New York, together with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and is slated to appear in three performances in Salzburg as part of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra’s residency under Susanna Mälkki. All that, and continuing to give regular recitals at major venues and festivals throughout the world. He has recently developed a collaboration with Behzod Abduraimov which will see them perform on tour in the US and Europe in the coming months.
So there you have it – new(ish) stars on the horizon covering familiar territory with a favorite orchestra and a favorite radio outlet. Anti-Road Rage Wednesday this week is good. Next week, it’s back to the historic stuff – I promise.
