Ft. Gibson Oklahoma – “Walked up – set his bag down and started shooting”.

December 6, 1999 – CBS World News Roundup: Late Edition – Gordon Skene Sound Collection –

December 6, 1999 – A day like so many other days lately. A 13 year old boy walked into his middle school at Ft. Gibson Oklahoma, set his bag down, pulled out a gun and started firing. The boy, described as a ‘church going honor student with many friends” allegedly opened fire outside the school with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun, wounding five students. Witnesses described hearing 10 shots and panic among the students. The boy dropped the gun and was immediately tackled by a safety officer. The 13 year old, who did not resist arrest and did not talk to police, showed no previous warning signs of a troubled child. Friends described him as very quiet, shy, nice and the description of what he did didn’t fit him. As is the case with so many of these shootings, hand-wringing, bafflement and counseling before returning to class.

A mixed verdict in Miami where SabreTech, the aircraft maintenance company where two employees were on trial in connection with the 1996 ValuJet crash. At issue was it was an accident or an act of criminal negligence, the jury chose to acquit the two employees but it did find SabreTech guilty. It was the first time in a civil aviation crash that a company had been found criminally responsible. SabreTech was convicted of causing the transportation of hazardous materials and failing to provide training but acquitted of conspiracy charges. SabreTech packed the canisters believed to have started the first in the ValuJet plane’s cargo hold. All 110 people aboard were killed when it crashed in the Everglades.

And that’s just a small slice of what went on, this December 6, 1999 as reported by The CBS World News Roundup: Late Edition.
