May 24, 1990 – News of the “Bigger Picture” kind. Today, President Bush announced renewal of China‘s Most Favored Nations trade benefits for an eleventh year, despite continued reprisals and executions of Tiananmen Square protestors from a year before. In making his announcement, President Bush expressed that it was in the U.S.’s best interest and the interest of the Chinese people, to continue China’s trade status, and not to do so would hurt the United States. When asked about the widespread rejections of such a statement, President Bush said it irked him that he was being accused of giving in to the Chinese, of being less interested than they (the critics) were of Human Rights for China. In fact, Bush pointed out – the renewal was met with widespread approval all over the world, including those Students and intellectuals in China, so it wasn’t a favor the U.S. was doing, in Mr. Bush’s mind.

The Goddess Of Democracy radio ship idea was scrapped when no Asian nation would grant port facilities. Spokespeople for the project said the idea was scuttled based on pressure from both the U.S. and China.

And the selling of the most radical reforms in Soviet history were being criticized as not going far enough. The tiny Baltic republic of Lithuania offered to freeze all legislation it had approved since its March 11th Declaration of Independence, but it refused to put a moratorium on the document declaring Lithuania free of the Soviet Union. All of this pointed up to the crippling nature of the situation, but it also indicated the crippling economic blockade was not working, and without reform the country would slip even further into economic chaos.

And that’s just a little of what went on, this May 24, 1990 as reported by The CBS World News Roundup.
