July 23, 1999 – A memorial this day. The private memorial in honor of John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn Bessette and her sister Lauren were eulogized in a private ceremony, the day after their ashes had been spread at sea.

His Uncle, Senator Ted Kennedy delivered the eulogy (an excerpt):

We thank the millions who have rained blossoms down on John’s memory. He and his bride have gone to be with his mother and father, where there will never be an end to love. He was lost on that troubled night, but we will always wake for him, so that his time, which was not doubled, but cut in half, will live forever in our memory, and in our beguiled and broken hearts. We dared to think, in that other Irish phrase, that this John Kennedy would live to comb gray hair, with his beloved Carolyn by his side. But like his father, he had every gift but length of years. We who have loved him from the day he was born, and watched the remarkable man he became, now bid him farewell.

God bless you, John and Carolyn. We love you and we always will.

Meanwhile, the crash investigation continued. The Navy Recovery ship brought the remaining wreckage to the Military hangar in Rhode Island where investigators are expected to pore over the instrument panel, the propeller and other items for clues to determined what caused this tragedy. Some parts were expected to be forwarded to labs or manufacturers for closer examination. It was known for certain that the three victims died instantly when the plane hit the ocean.

And Shuttle Columbia finally lifted off for orbit after two scrubs. The Shuttle was the first to be commanded by a Woman; Eileen Collins and one of the missions was to launch the $1 billion Chandra X-ray telescope.

And that’s a little of what went on, this July 23, 1999 as reported by The CBS World news Roundup.
