The Luna Kicks – new sounds from Derry; further evidence there’s music everywhere.

The Luna Kicks – In session for John Toal – August 11, 2018 – BBC Ulster –

Further exploration of what’s new and interesting out there this week. The Luna Kicks in session tonight. Recorded on August 11th by BBC Ulster. Aged between 17 and 21, The Luna Kicks are four boys, two of which are brothers – Jordan & Nathan Edgar, Jack Meenan and Marc Hutcheson. Their songs are made up from peacefully strong vocals and lyrics, anthemic drum beats and strong bass & guitar riffs. Described as “Ones to watch as a strong band with big promise”.

As yet, unsigned (they’re that new) – but, as their webpage proclaimed; a band with big promise. Nicely crafted work, even though it’s all based on this single session track (I don’t think they did more for this show – I checked). They managed to make a favorable impression in under 3 minutes, so that says something about potential. They did release a single late last year, and I’m including it to give you a better idea of what they sound like.

From what I gather, they’ve been gigging around Ireland, sticking pretty much close to home. They performed at the recent Stendhal Festival a few days ago and, by all accounts, it went down well.

This all points to the idea that there’s a lot of music out there, and much of it is new by bands and artists we may not be all that familiar with (or familiar at all). So I think, rather than bemoan the fact that the current state of affairs in the mainstream is pretty dismal, you only have to go exploring to find that there’s much to be excited about. What the future has in store for The Luna Kicks is anybody’s guess, but some of it will have to come from the band and their willingness to engage in the slog and to keep pushing. Contrary to what you may have seen on reality TV, there are no instant successes – and if you’re in it for the long haul, it’s the only way you can be.

Here’s there single, Back To You, added as a bonus to their session:
