November 15, 1999 – News for this day 19 years ago. The Chairman of the NTSB was quoted as saying he hoped the mystery of Egyptair Flight 990 would be solved. Although still no conclusive answers on what happened were forthcoming, investigators were optimistic answers would be forthcoming. The latest twist involved either a religious statement or prayers captured on the Cockpit voice recorder by one of the pilots. It raised serious questions as to whether the doomed flight was the product of an accident or a suicide. But there was no agreement as to what the prayers meant; whether it was routine or something more ominous. However, at this point, there was no connection to the statement heard and the crash that followed.
The age-old question of Prayers in Public Schools was back before the Supreme Court. This time it was a Texas, where a lower court ruled that a school allowed prayer at football games, but now the High court agreed to pass judgement on that decision. The Superintendent of the Santa Fe, Texas School district said they would like the schools to have the same choice that everyone else has; to choose to pray before a football game. A final decision was expected to be reached sometime in 2000.
And a Judge in Brazil, Indiana was quoted as saying Orville Lynn Majors was a “paragon of evil”. The former Nurse was sentenced to 360 years in prison for killing six patients who were under his care. Family members told reporters there was a real sense of “relief” the trial was over and that the previous five years were a living hell. Majors maintained his innocence and his lawyers were promising an appeal.
And that’s a small slice of what happened, this November 15, 1999 as reported on The CBS World News Roundup: Late Edition.
