April 25, 2000 – It’s All Happening At The Zoo – It’s Not Happening With High-Tech – It Could Happen With Stress
April 25, 2000 – The National Zoo in Washington D.C. was the scene of a gun battle between two rival gangs – caught in the crossfire were a group of school children on a field trip. Five kids were shot, one in the head and in grave condition near the entrance of the zoo. Witnesses said there was a full-on gun battle between two groups of teenagers who were arguing at the scene just off Connecticut Avenue. The one child, shot in the head was 12 and was not expected to live, while the other four were wounded but not as serious, though they had various degrees of injuries from the gunshots. Another day at the Zoo in the big city . . .
Meanwhile, Technology stocks had a bad day on Wall Street, dragged down by Microsoft which fell nearly $13 a share on reports the Justice Department wanted to break up the company. The NASDAQ plunged nearly 300 points, then recovered to close with a nearly 161 point loss at 3,482. The Blue Chip stocks, on the other hand, had a good day. The Down closing 62 points higher at 10,844. You win some, you lose some – so goes the Wall Street crapshoot.
And, on top of everything about getting older, adding extra pounds for no particular reason might be caused from stress, as a researcher at the University of Maryland Medical School discovered. Apparently, constant stress can trigger an uncontrollable appetite that leads to weigh gain around the middle. And that increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, Diabetes and some types of Cancer. It also doesn’t help that the older you get the slower your metabolism becomes. So much to look forward to in the twilight years.
And that’s a small slice of what was happening, this April 25, 2000 as reported by The CBS World News Roundup; Late Edition.
