May 9, 2000 – And the word was; Lottery – $300 million was in the jackpot. And even though the drawing wasn’t until the next week, people were already lining up for tickets and a chance to become overnight millionaires. The ever growing jackpots were bringing out people who had never played the Lottery before.
Meanwhile, in Belfast Ireland; The Irish Republican Army were making promises on this day to disarm. It was the most significant statement from the IRA since it called a ceasefire in 1994. The leadership pledged to begin dealing with illegal weaponry within weeks. Spokespeople for the IRA also said it allow its arms dumps to be inspected. It was what Protestant political leaders had been calling for, and it could mean that Northern Ireland’s coalition government could be back up and running within two weeks.
The LAPD corruption scandal was getting a boost via the Justice Department’s Civi Rights division, who were slated to meet the following week with Los Angeles city officials. A Civil Rights lawsuit was expected to be filed unless the city agreed to Police reforms.
The infamous Love Bug Computer virus was still very much out there and so was the person behind it. Authorities indicated they may be getting a break in the case in The Philippines as Manila Police continued to insist they had a suspect under investigation, and in fact, under surveillance. They said what was holding them up was difficult in finding a judge over this weekend who could analyze search warrants and arrest warrants and being given the authority to move in, something they hoped to have resolved perhaps within hours.
