Oasis in concert this weekend. Recorded live at the Rock In Rio Festival, January 11, 2001. I’ve often said that Oasis were one of the bands largely responsible for giving the music world its much needed kick on the ass in the mid-1990s. Pop Music goes through doldrums and complacency every few years – it happens. Stuff gets old, limited, frozen – and like everything, Rock needs to be constantly moving, reaching and trying in order to stay vital – otherwise it’s dead and gets rejected. It’s the energy and urgency that it so crucial to Rock as a form; it has to be there or it just doesn’t survive.
Just prior to Oasis coming along, we were at something of a crossroads. If you’ll remember, we got kicked in the head when Kurt Cobain died and it put a damper (to a degree) on Grunge and the then-current music scene in general. And even though it carried on, there needed to be a new spark to ignite all the passions. Madchester was on the threshold, still forming, shaping and refining – it hadn’t come of age just quite yet, even though it had been bubbling and forming since the 1980s.
And then Oasis arrived (as well as Blur and a slew of other bands); loud, bombastic and a wall of sonic power that fairly climbed into our heads and went at it with hammer and tongs – that’s what we needed – every few years we need to get the voltage increased in our seats to snap us out and show us it’s still alive, still happening and still very much vital.
