June 27, 1978 – another busy news day and a world gone somewhat berserk. First, from Moscow came word about the pending release of U.S. businessman Francis Crawford, held on charges of currency violations. Likewise, came news from New Jersey regarding the pending release of two Soviet employees accused of espionage and jailed before being released to Soviet Ambassador Antole Dobrynin. Crawford was slated to be turned over to the American Ambassador in Moscow.
In a seemingly unrelated development, two American correspondents were were ordered to appear in a Moscow court to face slander charges. It was purported to be in connection with stories about the Soviet republics of Georgia and Armenia that painted the republics in a less-than-favorable light.
And an axe-wielding Muscovite went berserk and was jailed for carrying out a series of attacks, killing two elderly foreigner tourists outside the Intourist hotel and seriously injured a third.
Hearings were going on this day to determine if an Attorney General can be held in contempt of court. The Attorney General in this case was Griffin Bell, who was accused of withholding evidence in a civil trial; the files of eighteen informers who once spied on the Socialist Workers Party for the FBI. Bell argued that it would cripple the FBI’s future operations and was seeking higher court review of the issue.
And rioting broke out in the border town of Matamoros, Mexico, across from the Rio Grande and Brownsville Texas, as several thousand students went on a rampage burning the city hall and several other buildings as well as widespread looting of stores and banks. The violence took Mexican police and army troops almost four hours to restore order. At least two rioters were said to have been killed by Police resisting an attack on the Matamoros Jail.
