Jimi Hendrix Experience – Live from Hamburg, Germany – recorded at Studio 1, Radiohaus, North German Radio on March 18, 1967. Since today marks the anniversary of Jimi Hendrix’ passing – and how so many words have filled posts and pages with recollections and remembrances of those legendary live performances – those of us who almost took it for granted that he would be around forever, that there would still be a Jimi Hendrix going on 60 or even 70. It never occurred to anyone that his time was comparatively short, but his influence, his presence left a mark that hasn’t gone away, nor is it ever likely to. Perhaps it’s best to be reminded of the musician – by hearing an actual concert, with boundless energy, missed notes – hoarse voice and amazing madness.

Much as you could say that Jimi Hendrix was the result of a specific space and time – a time that was marked by upheaval and innovation – and that it could be easy for someone not familiar with the music, having not been born anywhere near the time Hendrix was on the planet, to dismiss his music as something quaint and of another time – that would be missing the point. There have been artists and voices who have come along, as long as music has been made, who have made an indelible impression on what has come after them. Theirs is a true stamp of innovation and a move in taking everything to its next logical step.

It might be hard to imagine, and you may not think so, but there isn’t one single aspect of Contemporary music since 1970 that hasn’t been influenced in some way (great or small) by the example and point of view of Jimi Hendrix. He freed things up, took it away from the predictable – made it an exploration, settled in new places and showed new possibilities. That’s what Music is all about and that’s what makes Music the single most vibrant form of expression there is.

But back to the business at hand – fans have probably heard this concert hundreds, if not thousands of times – but if you’re just making the discovery – crank it up and keep an open mind. It works wonders.
