October 29, 2007 – The Boston Red Sox win the World Series for the second year in a row. With a 4-3 win over the Colorado Rockies, it was the second time in four seasons that it was a four game sweep. The Red Sox dominated the Series from start to finish, only once in the entire games did the Red Sox even trail. Needless to say, there was giddy pandemonium in Boston.

On a more serious note – what caused a terrible beach house fire that killed seven college students in Ocean Beach North Carolina, officials still didn’t know. It would be several days before the cause was finally discovered. The names of the seven students hadn’t been release yet, but six of them were from the University of South Carolina where grief counsellors were scheduled to be available.

And the Fire fight was continuing in Southern California. More than a dozen wild fires were being battled with only a few being even partly contained. Officials were worrying that the hot, dry Santa Ana winds which sparked this latest series of infernos would return later on in the week. The yearly visit of Santa Ana winds and the wild fires that accompany them still bring surprise – seemingly no part of the picturesque and bucolic surrounding hills and valleys are immune, and its often a guessing game where the latest raging wall of uncontrollable flames will hit. The end result is still the same; mass evacuation, mass destruction, a pall of choking smoke and ash that lays over Los Angeles, untold millions in property damage and a blind determination to rebuild, until it starts all over again. Welcome to Sudden California.

And that’s a small slice of the news for this October 29, 2007 as reported by The CBS World News Roundup.
