Eden, in concert from The BBC’s Paris Theatre in London from 1985.
I confess, I know absolutely nothing about this band, aside from being from Lincoln in the UK, signed to Polydor in the UK, having one single released in 1985 in the UK (the year of this concert) and dropping off the face of the earth.
From as best as I’ve researched, one of the founding members of the band, Darren Poole was the principle writer for the group and was responsible for writing their only single. What happened to him or the other members of the band is anyone’s guess, and I am leaving it up to a knowledgable reader to come to the rescue and give us some background, or at least what became of them. There is almost no information on them available – and even the overexposed, grainy, weather-beaten photo used for this post is the only example of the band that appears to exist.
But as much as I would like to say this is an isolated mystery, it’s not. There are so many bands, so many artists who have come and gone in a flash; who either went on to greener pastures with other bands, went solo or dropped out of Music altogether that it’s hard to keep track.
I have read their solitary single Free has become a cult classic at dance clubs and this concert, part of a promotion for the single, is just about their only live appearance anywhere.
But how many bands have you seen come and go – show a lot of promise, or had the, at least temporary, support of a major record comany an then quietly faded from view – the fruits of their labor either ignored completely or resurfacing as an underground hit in another context.
Needless to say, it’s a mystery – but at least you have this concert to listen to and maybe someone with more information can step forward. It would be nice.
Crank it up anyway.
