January 22, 1997 – on the 24th anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision on abortion, law enforcement nerves were on full alert as protests and expected attacks on Family planning clinics went into high gear. Sure enough, a small explosion went off a few doors away from a Planned Parenthood clinic in Washington D.C. – although not entirely sure it was a planned clinic attack, D.C. police wasted no time combing the area for suspects; assembling descriptions and talking to eyewitnesses. No injuries or damage had been reported. And even though it wasn’t entirely sure the intended target was the clinic, it still prompted President Clinton to denounce the act, saying that violence was wrong in the area of abortion rights and that Roe v. Wade was in fact law.
Meanwhile, Dairy farmers staged a one-day strike to protest falling milk prices. Farmers were blaming the 25% drop on the Government and Kraft Foods – the affects included a dramatic spike in Dairy farms going out of business.
In France, 500 employees of a Paris bank released the Bank’s governor and other executives held hostage for six days in a protest over job cuts. They were waiting on word from a mediator.
Jurors in the O.J. Simpson civil trial were hearing final summations. Today it was attorney Daniel Petrocelli, attorney for the family of Ron Goldman, one of the two murder victims, alleged to have been murdered by Simpson. Simpson, in turn sat unflinching, taking notes.
And the 105th Congress was trying to move past it’s House vote on the Ethics scandal over Newt Gingrich. Many felt it was time to move on, while others felt this was such a rancorous and divisive case that it would take a long time for Congress to get back to anything resembling normal.
