June 15, 1983 – Santiago Chile woke up this morning choking, soaked to the skin and with burned eyes. It was the latest in a series of clashes between protestors and the government of Augusto Pinochet, who seized power in 1973 in a bloody military coup which saw the abrupt removal of elected President Salvatore Allendé and a 10 year reign of terror. today against the 10-year-old rule of Gen. Augusto Pinochet.
The day before, hundreds of thousands of Chileans joined in a national day of protest, and by this day more than 200 people were reported to have been arrested around the country. The number was climbing as young people clashed with the police in downtown areas of major cities and entire working-class neighborhoods were blocked off by bonfires and rock throwing residents.
People of all ages and classes joined in defying the Government, banging pots and pans and honking car horns in a planned signal of protest beginning at 8 P.M. Few Injuries Reported
The police struck back with tear gas, water cannons and dogs. Even some fashionable apartment towers in the upper-middle-class section of Providencia in this capital came under tear-gas attack as residents banged pots at their windows, creating a deafening din. Things were just getting started.
Meanwhile, from the White House, President Reagan was spending this, the second day, talking about Education. First in Knoxville Tennessee and later on this day in Albuquerque New Mexico. His message and his argument was that Education does not become a political football, however in recent weeks it was becoming a political issue with Reagan openly attacking Capitol Hill Democrats of floating an idea to increase Federal spending to improve American schools. Reagan was adamantly against it and went on the criticize the NEA, the nations biggest Teachers Union. The debate continued.
And Prince Charles and Lady Diana arrived in Canada to begin a tour which was originally slated to happen a year before, but was cancelled due to the birth of Prince William.
