November 12, 1944 – For the first time in over 17 weeks, the world heard from Adolf Hitler. Not directly, but issuing a proclamation that sounded pretty much like the usual propaganda; a victorious Germany and the preservation of Germans and representatives of “The People’s Army” swore allegiance to the Führer and pledged unconditional resistance to the allies.
Meanwhile, Allied troops were making fresh gains along the western front while the Russians reportedly crossed the Danube near Budapest.
All fighting along the 3rd Army front pointed to the fact that German resistance was stiffening as the allies broke through the first line of defenses along the Lorraine sector where the concrete fortresses of the Maginot line were concealed. In Paris, Prime Minister Winston Churchill addressed the citizens who liberated their city and got a cheering ovation, while the Paris Liberation Committee made Churchill an honorary Citizen of Paris, presenting him with a German bayonet and a swastika banner that had flown over the Paris Police headquarters.
Meanwhile in London, the talk was about Postwar Europe, once Victory Day had been proclaimed. Studies were made of potential of German industries, to eventually be put under Allied control after the war was over. What could potentially be left of German resources and skilled labor. Plans were set forth to press every able German civilian who could work, to be put to work; all men from 16 to 60 and all women up to age 50 who were without children were under consideration to be put to work either inside Germany or relocated to work in areas of Europe wrecked by the German armies, with Poland and Soviet Russia having priority on the labor force.
