December 10, 1999 – Many months until election 2000, the race to the White House was already scoring its first potential drop-out. Democratic hopeful Bill Bradley cancelled his upcoming appearances, owing to a recurrence of the heart irregularity. Senator Bradley was diagnosed in 1996 as having Atrial Fibrillation, or irregular heartbeat which Bradley’s doctor was quoted as saying was more of an “inconvenience than a problem”. Bradley was admitted to a hospital in San Francisco and was expected to be released within days.
Wen Ho-Li, the Taiwanese-American scientist, fired from the Los Alamos Nuclear weapons lab, insisted he was innocent of the charges of espionage. Li was not charged with espionage in the 59 count indictment unsealed earlier in the day, but he was accused to taking secrets out of the lab, secrets that wound their way to China. Li insisted he was innocent and that he was a scapegoat for Los Alamos’ lax security and that he was considered a “likely suspect” because he was Asian. Li admitted he moved classified material from the lab to an unclassified computer for convenience but insisted he was no spy.
Moscow launched a formal protest over the expulsion of a Russian diplomat in Washington. The diplomat was apparently just one player in a scheme that planted a listening device in the State Department. Intelligence officials said it had all the earmarks of an inside job by someone who worked in the State Department and could plant the device without arousing suspicion. If that was the case, a Russian agent could still be at large.
And founding member of The Band, Rick Danko passed away at his home in Woodstock, New York – not far from the legendary music festival in 1969 and in the same house the debut album, Music From Big Pink was recorded in 1968. Dank was 56.
