It’s February 1982 – You’re A Teenager – You Live In L.A. – You’re In High School – You’re In Love – You’re Screwed.

Love Happens.
Love happens – sometimes out of nowhere.

KROQ – Mike Rophone – February 5, 1982 – Gordon Skene Sound Collection –

Well, maybe not screwed but your life got complicated. It just happened. You’ve known each other since grade school – you didn’t actually like each other then. Something changed – you did – you both did. The world became different and you started seeing it with a different pair of eyes. You read about stuff like that, saw it in movies. Up until Christmas vacation you thought it happened to everybody else, just not you. You thought you were different; lovable did not describe you. Oh, you tried – a bunch of times – all through Junior High you ran around with your heart on your sleeve and nobody took you seriously. You got the old “well, I like you as a friend” excuse that meant “thanks-but no thanks”. You were convinced you weren’t fit for human consumption – you didn’t cause hearts to race or minds to get messed up. You truly believed you were invisible; one of the Ghost People. Yep – that was you – Occupation: Ghost.

Yet here you are – two-hour phone conversations about next to nothing laced with long-long silences on the other end – but you wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. Everything is suddenly wonderful and everything in the universe makes sense. You feel a little like a stereotype and you wonder what your friends think.

Love has finally climbed through your window and you’re not even half through the eleventh grade. You’re wondering how long this feeling is going to last – or maybe you’re imagining it, or maybe you’re just a brief fling until the next one comes along any minute, or maybe this happens to everybody and it’s no big deal. Maybe you really are screwed.

Ain’t life grand?

While your life is spinning out of control there’s always your radio – and this particular radio is dialed into February 5, 1982 and Mike Rophone along with Jed The Fish. Life makes sense after all.

Enjoy the ride.

  1. Mike Raphone here, Brent Kahlen sent me this, interesting, must be Frazer Smith in the beginning but I can’t understand why he promoted my business MikeRaphone productions with that giveaway. Jed mentioned the Roq of the 80s and 90s yet he is playing the Stones, seems like by 1982 Rick Carroll had gone all ‘new wave’ and no Stones would have been played. Going to see what Jed has to say. Not sure how to send him the link though.
