Over to Paris this week for a recital by cellist Pauline Buet and pianist David Violi in music of Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. Giuseppe Martucci, Ferruccio Busoni and Gian Francesco Malipiero, recorded at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris by the venerable Radio France Musique on May 12, 2015.

The concert begins with the Sonata for Cello and Piano by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. Followed by Pezzo Op. 69 number 2 by Giuseppe Martucci. The small Suite for cello and Piano BV 215 by Ferruccio Busoni, and concluding the concert with an encore; Song In The Infinite by Gian Franceso Malipiero.

A little background on the artists via the I Giardini website:

Coming from a family of musicians, Pauline Buet receives an education based on the pleasure of playing, listening and discovering repertoires. These are the watchwords which, like a leitmotif, dictate the choices of his career and lead him to favor chamber music and Ancient Music on period instruments.

With the Ensemble I Giardini, of which she is the co-founder and artistic co-director with the pianist David Violi, since 2011 she rereads the great works of the repertoire and particularly rediscovers the French romantic composers, on the biggest international stages: Bouffes du Nord, Salle Bourgie in Montreal, Bologna Festival Beethovenfest, Villa Medicis …

In sonata, Pauline Buet recently performed in China (in the largest halls of the country including the concert hall of the Forbidden City in Beijing), at the Musée d’Orsay and at the Palazzetto Bru Zane in Venice and recorded with David Violi a disc dedicated to Poulenc, Chopin and Barbara at Alpha Classics in 2020.

French pianist of Italian origin, David Violi was trained at the CNSM De Lyon before becoming artist in residence at the “Banff Center for the arts” (Canada) then disciple of Aldo Ciccolini.

Winner of the Yamaha Conservatory Competition, the “Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe”, Grandpiano Prize, he won first prize at the Sakai International Piano Competition (Japan). A regular guest at major venues on the international scene, David Violi performs in recital and with orchestra in Japan (Sofia Hall, Toga Bunka Haikan Hall), in Spain (Circulo Bellas Artes de Madrid), in Moldavia (Sala Cu Orga, Chisinau) , in Sweden (Stockholm Musikaliska), in Germany (Bamberg Sinfonie an der Regnitz), in Canada, in China (Beijing NCPA, Shanghai SHOAC, Guangzhou Opera …), Taiwan, in Italy (Rome, Florence, Venice), at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw …

In France, it can be found at the Auditorium of the Musée d’Orsay, at the Opéra Comique in Paris, at the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord, but also in the biggest festivals: Piano aux Jacobins in Toulouse, l’Esprit du piano in Bordeaux, Berlioz Festival at La Côte Saint André, Lille Piano Festival, at the Chopin festival in Paris, La Folle Journée in Nantes, at the Radio France festival in Montpellier … It can be heard frequently on the airwaves of France Musique, and his recitals are broadcast regularly on the Mezzo channel or on French television.

A program of less-familiar works played with honesty and inspiration – doesn’t get much better than that.

Enjoy.
