May28, 1996 – Politics and elections in the news this May 28th. Boris Yeltsin was campaigning ahead of the Russian Elections, looking for a boost in popularity owing to the ceasefire in Chechnya. Voters were heading to the Polls in Israel and India’s Hindu Nationalist Government quit after only 13 days.
For Russia, it was about Boris Yeltsin cashing in on his surge in popularity over the ceasefire in Chechnya and taking his campaign on the road. Addressing Russian troops in Chechnya, Yeltsin proclaimed the war was over and they had won. All this, while details of the peace settlement were being hammered out in Moscow between Chechen Rebel leader Zelimkhan Yandarbiyev and Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin. Yeltsin was calling this an historic agreement, but it was more a political windfall coming less than three weeks before Russia headed to the polls as the war in Chechnya was increasingly unpopular and it was threatening to derail Yeltsin’s chances for re-election.
Meanwhile in Israel – campaigning was over as voters headed to the polls to elect a new Prime Minister. It was between Shimon Peres and Benjamin Netanyahu, or as some were putting it “a campaign between hope and fear” with Peres representing Hope and Netanyahu representing Fear. Opinion polls were putting Peres ahead, but with a lead smaller than the margin of error. Victory in one of Israel’s most contentious elections was still up for grabs and a nation was holding its collective breath.
And in India, the Hindu Nationalist Government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee ran aground just 13 days after being elected and was forced out with Vajpayee annoncing his resignation ahead of what was certain to be a no-confidence vote for the minority government with India now facing a period of political instability as a loose coalition of left-wing parties were expected to be asked by the President to form a new government. So so-called United Front would not have a majority in Parliament and will have to rely on the support of the centrist Congress Party, which was voted out of power in elections held earlier in the month.
