NBC Radio – The Boston Symphony In Rehearsal – February 24, 1951 – Gordon Skene Sound Collection –
It was broadcast on February 24, 1951.
One of the greatest violinists of the 20th century, it’s a rare occasion to hear Yehudi Menuhin in a rehearsal setting and this one, as always, provides a fly-on-the-wall to the proceedings and the process involved with solo artist and orchestra.
Yehudi Menuhin was an American-born violinist and conductor who spent most of his performing career in Britain. He is widely considered one of the great violinists of the 20th century. He played the Soil Stradivarius, considered one of the finest violins made by Italian luthier Antonio Stradivari.
As with all the others from this series, there isn’t a complete performance of the concerto – sadly, the usual 1/2 hour snippet. But it’s a historic recording and another in a fascinating collection of classic broadcasts.
Enjoy and come back next week.
