September 29, 1997 – The trial of suspected Oklahoma City Bombing accomplice Terry Nichols began this day. In what was expected to be a much faster trial than that of Timothy McVeigh’s, it was nonetheless a repeat of the gut-wrenching experience that began on the morning of April 19th, 1995 when a terrorist bomb went off in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, killing some 186 people. Defense was expected to argue that Nichols was an unknowing bystander who happened to be caught in the middle, while Prosecutors would argue Nichols was just as responsible for the construction of the bomb and its execution as McVeigh was. The trial began with Jury selection this day.
In other news – the subject of Fraternity hazing at MIT in Boston was being looked at by University officials. Seems widespread opinion centered around campus fraternities that copious amounts of alcohol being consumed were a proviso for joining these groups. Reports that one Freshman pledge was in a coma due to alcohol poisoning were causing many to consider banning alcohol consumption on campus altogether and threatening suspension of the offending fraternities as a way of dealing with the issue.
And Secretary of State Madeleine Albright was once again shuttling around the Middle East in an attempt at brokering some sort of peace settlement between Israelis and the PLO. Since any and all talks regarding these overtures was predicated by a minefield of stipulations, the mere act that both sides were dipping their proverbial feet into the concept was given cautious optimism that maybe, just maybe, things would be different this time. Palsied fingers were crossed.
