News for this November 5th in 1941 had much to do with the War in the air and the land war in the East. British RAF bombers staged raids overnight on Germany in the industrial Ruhr and Rhineland sections and in parts of Vichy France – reports told one the loss of one plane. Other news on Vichy shipping, which was under direct control from Germany. One Vichy convoy was intercepted by the British Navy. Attempts to scuttle the ships in the convoy were stopped. The British said the convoy was transporting contraband and they had no desire to deprive the French people of Food. The attempt to scuttle the ships were seen by London as an attempt to gain propaganda, by inferring the British were interested in depriving the French people of food. But they were really after good which the Axis was using to fulfill requirements, and if such goods were allowed to pass, a hole would be drilled in the shipping blockade.
Other news was a late report from Berlin that German armies in Southern Russia had reached the south coast of the Crimean peninsula on the Black Sea.
And Washington’s attempts at getting Finland to make a separate peace with Russia were being met with little comment other than speculation that Russia will demand a break-off in diplomatic relations between Finland and the U.S. and a declaration of War on Finland from Great Britain. Diplomatic circles were agreeing the Finland/Russia situation was a special and awkward one.
