Donna Blue to drag us over Hump Day. Recorded live in Bonn on October 6th by the venerable West German Radio, i.e. Rockpalast.
Like just about every artist and band whose careers have been affected by the current Pandemic, life is slowly returning to live music and Donna Blue found an enthusiastic crowd in Bonn, Germany this past October. Things are looking up.
Donna Blue are Danique van Kesteren and Bart van Dalen along with Pieter Zaal – bass and Ees Schaper – drums, samples, backing vocals. They’ve been around since 2017, have already done one gig in New York (just before the lockdown in 2020) and are slated to make an appearance at SXSW in March 2022, so word is getting around. They characterize themselves as Cinematic Indie Pop, using the atmospheric backdrop and inspiration of films by David Lynch as a stepping off point. They also slip in and out of numerous genres, including the perennial yé-yé of French 60s pop as well as some American singers, like Nancy Sinatra – and mashing it up with the surreal soundscape provided by the vocals of Danique van Kesteren. All this has created a huge appeal to many, including none other than Elton John who fell in love with their debut single Sunset Boulevard and has done much to promote it via his radio show. So far they have two ep’s out – the first one, issued in July 2018 has sold out, but the second one, issued in May of 2019 is still available via their website .
