Mike Finnigan – It Came Upon A Midnight Clear –

It’s the week before Christmas, and like every year we head into holiday mode with a whole batch of Christmas music – some familiar – some brand new – some downright strange. So buckle up and get ready.

Starting the festivities with a very dear friend who we sadly lost earlier this year. Mike Finnigan was a huge talent and a guiding light in many lives. I was honored and humbled to call him my friend. He is missed every day.

He did this rendition of It Came Upon A Midnight Clear for an episode of the TV series ER several years ago. And even though it’s a well-worn standard for the holidays, Mike made it his own. With his unmistakeable voice and spoken-from-the-soul message, he breathed new life and reminded us all again that the holiday season is about reflection and gratitude; that we’re all in this together.

This has been, I think by most people’s estimation, a pretty rotten year. It’s been fraught with uncertainty and loss – there’s been a lot of that – there’s been fear and frustration and anger. Of lashing out and quiet despair.

But the one thing that has been the unifier, the constant, is music. It is the glue that holds us together. And whether you’re playing it or listening to it, music has the ability to transform and to take you places.

So I thought I would start the week of Holiday music off with a word from Mike Finnigan, as a tribute to his memory and a celebration of his inspired talent.

Celebrate – it doesn’t really matter what. You’re here.
