January 11, 2000 – Election season starts and out come the tax-cut proposals. Candidates George Bush and John McCain proposed tax-cut plans as campaign promises. The Bush plan, similar to McCain’s would rely totally on future surpluses while the McCain plan would eliminate some $150 Billion in corporate tax loopholes. McCain also wanted to put families earning up to $70,000 in the lowest 15% tax bracket. He proposed to eliminate the so-called Marriage Penalty and he would also ban sales taxes on the Internet. The McCain plan would also set aside $700 billion for Social Security, but he also wanted people to invest 20% of their retirement savings privately in high-yield accounts. The season of promises was gearing up.
Meanwhile, President Clinton went to the Grand Canyon to a ceremony he where extended federal protection to over a million acres of land surrounding Grand Canyon. Despite objections from local officials, Clinton utilized provisions in a nearly century-old law that designates certain Federal lands as National Monuments, protected from commercial development. In addition to the Grand Canyon, Clinton also extended protections to hundreds of miles of California coastline.
And the Baseball Hall Of Fame was getting ready to induct Carleton Fisk and Tony Perez to the shrine in Cooperstown. Fisk was elected to the Hall of Fame on his second try while it was the 9th time on the ballot for Perez. Both were to be inducted on July 23rd.
