You remember. You were exited over the possibilities. Two months to go and you’ll never HAVE to wake up every morning – never HAVE to be home by 10 – never HAVE to sweat out mid-terms (except the one coming up, but that doesn’t count).
All that freedom and all that time and none of those responsibilities.
That’s what all your friends say. But you know, and so do they, it just ain’t so. You’re scared and you’re depressed. You aren’t close to anybody. You have friends, sure. But that’s not what you’re talking about. A hug would be nice. A hug with or without strings – a hug that just let’s you know you’re okay – life is okay – the planet is okay – human contact. You’re alive and happening and you’re all in the same boat – doesn’t matter if there’s a kiss attached.
Been rough and strange times – hero’s dying and kids a little older than you getting killed. Guys your age getting drafted and heading off to war. That’s the thing you and your friends don’t talk about. You’re all going to be 18 and you’ll all head down to the Draft Board and you’ll all be waiting. You pretend it doesn’t matter – nobody wants to let on that the future has you freaked out – secretly you wish it would stay twelfth grade forever. Life as one big High Note.
But you gotta get real and you still have to get up in the morning, get dressed and you still have homeroom.
And maybe, just maybe you’re entire life will change in the next five minutes. It’s happened. You’ve heard about it – read about it in magazines. And you don’t notice your room has been swaying gently the past few seconds and people outside are yelling.
Aftershocks. January seemed like another century. Well . . .there’s that.
