– BSO In Rehearsal – Charles Munch, conducting – March 2, 1951 – Gordon Skene Sound Collection –
This week’s installment of our Boston Symphony In Rehearsal series features the BSO under Charles Munch rehearsing two wildly different pieces on the same program. Starting off with Handel’s Water Music and switching to Bartok’s Music for Two String Orchestras.
In short, a good cross-section of what the Orchestra can do. All of it taking place on March 2nd, 1951 with the ever-present Ben Grauer offering commentary.
Again, and as always, this isn’t a complete performance of either piece, but rather a half-hour glimpse into the inner-workings of an orchestra getting down to the business of rehearsing during the average day in the life of a Symphony orchestra.
Note: The original discs were badly damaged, so it may take a little getting used to even though we put a lot of work into making it sound as good as possible under the circumstances. Still, an important document.
Enjoy.
