Hatfield And The North – one of the brilliant and underrated bands of the 1970s Prog Period.

Hatfield And The North – In Concert for John Peel – BBC Radio 1 – November 21, 1974 – BBC Radio 1 –

A perennial favorite this weekend. Hatfield And The North in concert for John Peel recorded on November 21, 1974.

Further evidence the Canterbury Scene was a rich source of musical talent through the mid-late 1960s through the 70s – many bands from the area intermingled; some with greater commercial success than others, but all carrying a message of depth and weight that couldn’t be overlooked. Hatfield And The North could be regarded as one of the overlooked and underrated bands, but they managed to make a substantial mark with the people they brought their message to who mattered most, even though that may not have translated into commercial success it still left an impression – and it’s one that continues.

That, I think, is one of the key long-term successes with bands like the Hatfields and so many others from the genre. They managed to stay under the radar but have been almost constantly been discovered and re-discovered by musicians who either missed them the first time around or are coming to them now for the first time. They’ve always had a lot to say – some of it can’t be digested in one sitting. These were bands that were always meant to be listened to, not at. The more you listen to them the more you find.

Hatfield And The North are a journey well worth taking. And since you’re here – hit the Play button and start.

Enjoy the ride.
