Lizzie Reid – The Quay Sessions – BBC Radio Scotland – September 21, 2022 – BBC Radio –
Heading into calm waters tonight with a session by Glasgow up-and-comer Lizzie Reid, recorded during the Quay Sessions at BBC Radio Scotland on September 21st of this year.
Having put her debut ep out in 2021, and not settling for an unspecified period of inactivity due to the Lockdown, Lizzie went about putting together her debut album, Mooching which came out in August of this year. Since then she’s been making the rounds between BBC 6 Music and BBC Radio Scotland and heading out on tour starting the 23rd, opening for John Cale (as well as doing a few headliners) between then and December.
She’s been compared (favorably) to contemporaries, Laura Marling and Angel Olsen but she has her very own, unique point of view. So perhaps there’s a certain similarity in vocal phrasing but the comparisons end there. I found this session to be a delightful excursion to the quiet, contemplative place – somewhere we don’t often get the chance to visit. It’s a very enjoyable 11+ minutes and it leaves you wanting more. Sadly, this tour won’t be taking in any U.S. dates (for now), just sticking around home turf.
Tackling the issues of love, loss, identity and modern life, Lizzie Reid handles them in a subtle yet powerful way and it’s refreshing as well as profound, which taking the subtler road tends to do.
I am looking forward to the next installment and it will be interesting to hear her observations from this first big tour – I suspect there will be much reflection.
In the meantime, press the Play button and chill.
