The Middle-East: Ezer Weizman and Israeli Soldiers – Too early to celebrate – but never too late to be optimistic.

November 3, 1978 – With the ongoing Middle-East Peace negotiations and shuttle diplomacy taking center stage, an air of optimism was slowly making itself known. Israeli Defense Minister Ezer Weizman, the latest Israeli Official to be actively involved in the talks was on his way home feeling maybe not entirely confident but at least hopeful that progress was being made – he was going to make his feelings known in a report to the Cabinet. All this as the emphasis shifted to a peace settlement between Egypt and Israel and negotiations taking place in New York under the auspices of the United Nations. Menahem Begin was expected to arrive back in Washington for further talks with President Carter.

But there were still problems and sticking points. One of them relating to money. The Israelis were working on the assumption that the U.S. will ending up footing the bill for Israel’s pullback from the Sinai. The Carter Administration wasn’t happy about that but see no real alternative. The U.S. has become Israel’s main supporter in recent years, just as Saudi Arabia has become Egypt’s supporter. Someone was going to have to pay for this peace process – and as one observer pointed out; “Peace doesn’t come cheap”.

And with only four days left to go before America headed to the polls for the 1978 Mid-term elections Jimmy Carter was stumping hard and fast for Democratic candidates. Carter spent the night in Chicago before heading west first thing in the morning, stopping off in Portland Oregon, Sacramento California and Duluth Minnesota before heading back to Washington in the middle of the night. The message Carter was delivering was the same; “please vote on Tuesday”.

And with the continuing unfolding story in the Middle-East that’s just a sample of what went on, this November 3rd 1978 as presented by The CBS World News Roundup.
