Back to Paris this week for another installment of French radio performances of the 1950s. This time it’s the music of Jeanine Rueff, who is probably best known as a music educator, with one of her star pupils being Jean-Michel Jarre, of 70s Electronica/Experimental fame, than one of the Women composers in France who was closely associated with music for the Saxophone – although almost completely unknown everywhere else.
This week it’s a performance of one of her better known works; the concerto for Saxophones, written in 1956 and performed by one of the ensembles she was most associated with during her career, the Marcel Mule Saxophone Quartet.
It’s not entirely clear if this is the world premier recording of this work, or the first radio performance. But it is very close to the period she composed the work, so it’s possible this is a first performance. In any event, it is highly doubtful this recording has resurfaced since its initial hearing circa 1958.
