I was wondering when we were going to get around to doing an homage to the power trios of the early 70s. The heavy, riff-laden Blues/Rock outfits which came in the highly commercial form of Grand Funk and in the lesser, but no-less influential form of groups like Budgie were the staple of diets of FM radio in the 70s. Probably more aligned with Heavy Metal than with Deep Purple, and more with head-bangers than hair bands, Riff-Rock took its cue from Led Zeppelin, and further, from Blues Rock of the 60s.
In addition to being a staple on FM, it was also must-play with the majority of garage bands springing up in every corner of the globe between 1971 and 1975.
And so Royal Blood, which got its start in 2013, became quickly recognized as heirs-apparent to the Blues-Rock/Riff-Rock mantle.
In 2014 they were named Band to Watch by the BBC, this duo from Bristol have enjoyed a goodly amount of success early on. This year they are going on tour with Iggy Pop and Foo Fighters and criss-crossing the US and UK. They were also presented with the 2015 Brit Award for Best New Band, and presented by none other than Jimmy Page.
Tonight it’s an appearance from a couple weeks ago at Debaser Medis in Stockholm, faithfully preserved by the venerable Sveriges Radio. It was recorded on March 23rd to a very enthusiastic Swedish audience. Here is a reminder that some aspects of Rock Music don’t change and probably never will. And that’s a good thing.
For two guys, they make a lot of noise – and you are wholeheartedly encouraged to crank this one up.
