Dhani Harrison to start the week, recorded by WXPN-FM, Philadelphia for their Free At Noon program. When I first heard a track from In Parallel, Dhani Harrison’s debut solo album,I came to it without the benefit of knowing who it was at first, having tuned in a few seconds after the song started. I was immediately taken by it, riveted to the point of pulling my car over and listening until it was finished. Only after the track was over did I find out it was Dhani Harrison, son of George and possessor of his dad’s musical genes.
But what was important was that, the music and the musician were judged on their own merits – what they brought to the soundscape, not who they were related to. Of course, when I found out who it was I wasn’t surprised – but that I didn’t know who it was at first, and that his music was compelling and evocative for its own sake, more than convinced me that Dhani Harrison is a remarkable talent in his own right.
So when I got wind of a live radio performance, I had to spend time and listen to it. Harrison’s music is sweeping and intricate; it invites close inspection and is music to listen to, not at. I have found In Parallel to be an album that wears very well after repeated playings. It’s fresh and interesting, and each listening brings some new shade or nuance to the picture.
Clearly, Dhani Harrison is following in his father’s footsteps. But rather than imitate what George Harrison was doing, Dhani Harrison is traveling his own road and bringing his own point of view to the proceedings. That’s why I think his debut is the start of a solid and successful solo career – one that is well worth keeping and eye out for.
