Over to Paris this week for a recital by Pianist Philippe Cassard, recorded live in concert at Théâtre de l’Athénée on March 30, 2010 by Radio France.
The concert begins with Brahms Intermezzi op. 117, followed by Schumann’s Fantasie op. 17. It’s followed by 6 Intermezzi by Brahms, opus 118, Variations op. 27 by Webern, 3 pieces op. 11 by Schoenberg, Brahms Rhapsodie opus 79 Number 2 and concludes with Schumann’s Scénes d’enfants op. 15 Number 1.
And a few words about Cassard from Radio France:
Philippe Cassard is renowned for his interpretations of the works of Claude Debussy and Franz Schubert, two composers to whom he frequently pays homage, both on stage and on record.
Trained at the Paris Conservatory, Philippe Cassard obtained first prizes for piano (class of Dominique Merlet) and chamber music (class of Geneviève Joy-Dutilleux) in 1982. He perfected his skills with Hans Graf for two years at the Hochschule für Musik de Vienne then worked with the Russian pianist Nikita Magaloff. Finalist of the Clara Haskil Competition in 1985, he won the First Prize of the Dublin International Piano Competition three years later. A series of concerts followed alongside major European orchestras – among them, the London Philharmonic, the Orchester National de France and the Orchester Philharmonique de Radio France., the Capitole de Toulouse, the Philharmonie de Budapest – and performed under the direction of Sir Neville Marriner, Marek Janowski, Charles Dutoit, Pascal Tortelier, Armin Jordan, Vladimir Fedosseijev…
In 1993, Philippe Cassard performed the complete piano works of Claude Debussy in a single day and four recitals: he gave this cycle at the Besançon Festival and at the Wigmore Hall in London, then in Paris, Marseille, Lisbon, Dublin , Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo, Liège, Toulouse and Vancouver.
His passion for chamber music, nurtured from the conservatory, gave birth to numerous collaborations with artists such as Christa Ludwig, Natalie Dessay, Angelika Kirchschlager, Michel Portal, David Grimal, Anne Gastinel, the Ebène and Modigliani quartets.
Alongside his piano career, Philippe Cassard has published books on music, an essay on Franz Schubert published by Actes Sud and a book of interviews on cinema and music, Deux temps trois mouvement, published by Capricci. A producer at France Musique, since 2013 he has also been responsible for the classic programming of the Fontdouce festival in Charente Maritime.
