– Jefferson Airplane – Live At Winterland – October 3, 1967 – KSAN-FM –

Familiar historic territory tonight. A concert by Jefferson Airplane – on home turf in San Francisco, at the Winterland and recorded for KSAN-FM on October 3, 1967.

Jefferson Airplane were a legendary band from a legendary time – written about, dissected, hypothesized and bootlegged almost as much as The Grateful Dead – and certainly one of the touchstones of the Psychedelic period in America.

They were part of a revolution in sound – one that sprang up seemingly overnight, one which could trace its roots to a lot of familiar places. But a sound that was fresh and exuberant and became synonymous with a place and time.

If you’re coming to familiarize yourself with groups like The Jefferson Airplane, and the whole San Francisco scene of the mid-1960s, it’s hard not to fall into the broad strokes and stereotypes which have come to personify the era. The only thing you can possibly do is to try and listen to the music on its own terms and not come with preconceived notions. The music itself is pure and original and at the time it was completely different – and its an imperative to greet it with an open mind, as it was the first time a lot of us heard it.

Coming 55 years after the event, it’s possible to listen to this as something new and different if you haven’t heard it before. So forget what you read, heard about or imagined – just listen to it and make up your own mind.

And it would help if you played this one loud too.
