November 3, 2000 – Days before Election 2000, the last minute mud was being slung around the campaign trail. This time in the form of the uncovering of a DUI (Driving Under the Influence) conviction from 1976 in which candidate Texas Governor George W. Bush was arrested.

The charge, which had been laying around unnoticed for 24 years, suddenly surfaced, sending the Bush Camp into spasms of outrage. With George Bush Sr. crying foul, that his son hadn’t “touched a drop in I-don’t-know-how-many-years” and that Barbara Bush was “going ballistic” added a dash of color to an already messy campaign season.

There was other news. Amid last minute “get out the vote” election rallies, President Clinton was focusing attention on the Middle-East. In the hope the peace process could be resurrected, Clinton was planning a new round of White House meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and PLO leader Yasser Arafat. It was understood the meetings could take place as early as the upcoming week, starting a day after the election. Mr. Clinton would be meeting separately with each leader and that no three-way meeting was planned. it was the President’s hope that if an end to the violence between Israelis and Palestinians could be sustained, the two sides could be able to resume their talks, aimed at nailing down a final peace agreement before Mr. Clinton was to leave office in January 2001.

And the continuing saga of baseball great Darryl Strawberry. The suspended Baseball star appeared before a judge in a Tampa Florida court saying he had a death wish when he slipped out of a drug treatment center and smoked Crack Cocaine. Strawberry had a recurrence of Cancer but said he stopped Chemo-therapy because, with the side effects, life hadn’t been worth living.

And that’s just a small chunk of what happened this Election year, November 3, 2000 as reported on The CBS World News Roundup – Late Edition.
