Sam Himself tonight. One of the relatively newer voices coming out of Switzerland these days. Sam Koechlin (aka Himself)is, as he puts it; Swiss-born and Gotham-bred. His second album is getting ready to drop in January 2023 when he will embark on a worldwide tour. According to his bio, he’s been splitting his time between Brooklyn and Basel, where he’s been twice nominated for a Swiss Music Award.
His website has run some interesting bio facts and information to get you familiar with a name you may be hearing about a lot in the coming year:
“It’s barely been a year since Sam broke onto the international stage with his debut album Power Ballads, a “well-crafted set of atmospheric post-punk,” according to KEXP. Few would have blamed the artist for taking a rest on his laurels, e.g. his first national album chart entry, radio airplay across Europe and in the U.S. (as recently as May 2022, KCRW chose Sam’s song La Paz for its Today’s Top Tune segment) and two Swiss Music Award-nominations.
Wasting time, however, isn’t a skill you’ll find in the repertoire of the songwriter, performer and multi-instrumentalist. His prolific output speaks for itself: prior to Power Ballads, Sam was already making a name for himself and his “smokey baritone vocals” (Under The Radar) with Slow Drugs (2020), the EP he released shortly after the outbreak of COVID-19. The artist was touring in Europe when the pandemic pulled the plug on live music – and Sam’s return to New York City, his chosen home of the previous decade. The shock and solitude of that experience went on to shape Sam’s first album, on which Sam performed and recorded most instruments himself from a variety of DYI home studios.
As of 2022, Sam splits his time between Brooklyn and Basel, where he’s proud to be among the nominees of this year’s Pop Price. Looking ahead, Sam is set to play a series of shows through 2022 – including his second collaboration with the Basel Symphony Orchestra in October, a mini-run with Icelandic artist Asgeir and a New York showcase in December – before embarking on a major tour of Germany, Switzerland, Austria and elsewhere in Europe (TBA) in support of his second album next year.
