Another war brewing. This time the Falkland Islands, a small group of settlements in the South Atlantic within close proximity to the Argentine coast but claimed by Britain since 1833. It had been an ongoing argument that the Falklands were really part of Argentina, which they had called The Malvinas and that Britain seized the islands and were in direct violation of Argentina’s sovereignty in all that time.

In April 1982, a military Junta led by General Leopold Galtieri decided enough was enough and abruptly stopped the ongoing negotiations and invaded the islands, seizing the settlements and holding the British residents hostage.

The invasion was seen as flagrant act of war and it sent Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Parliament into a frenzy, promising retaliation and putting Britain on a war footing for the first time since the Suez Crisis in the 1950s. The first elements of the British fleet were on their way to the Falkland Islands, fully intent on a showdown. While at home, Britons were hearing the news, reading the papers and wondering what was next.

Meanwhile, The UN Security Council was meeting to try and find a settlement to the crisis. A vote was being called, since Argentina was not responding to the UN’s request for a response to come to New York and join the debate.

While this was going on, the Argentine invasion force took control of the settlement, sending the British Governor and the small contingent of Marines to Uruguay.

Back in the U.S. – one of the strongest storms to sweep out of the Rockies was heading east to wreak havoc on the Mid-west. So far, some 50 tornadoes were raking across the Midwest and the South.

And that’s just a small slice of news for this April 3rd 1982 as reported by The CBS World News Roundup.
