The legendary Jaki Byard this week. In concert, featuring solo work, his quartet and his big band, The Apollo Stompers, in concert at the Public Theatre in New York City, and recorded by NPR for their much-loved and sadly lamented Jazz Alive! Series in 1979.

An immense talent on the Jazz scene from the 1930s all the way up to his untimely passing in 1999, Jaki Byard was not only master of the keyboard, but he was also something of a renaissance man, fluent in tenor and alto sax and a wide range of other instruments, as well as an accomplished composer/arranger.

This concert gives the audience a grand showcase of his talents as well as an interview conducted by Michael Cuscuna. It’s a great trip through the eclectic world of Jaki Byard, with some insights and background history.

Just under an hour, it’s well-worth hanging out and relaxing and diving in to.

It’s Sunday, after all.
