Being on the West Coast of the U.S. it only figures that, with regards to West Coast bands and artists, we’re always the last to know. Such is the case with Dear Banshee, a band literally up the coast from me, but had to find out by way of Threads that they have a new single out and would like as many people as possible to hear it.

Okay – we’ll do that – ‘Smell the Smoke’ is available now!

Since it’s not Past Daily’s policy to run singles or albums (unless the artists says it’s okay to), as we don’t want to do anything that would potentially cut into sales and making a living – I decided to run a session they recorded smack in the middle of the COVID lockdown in 2021 in order to give you a taste of this very listenable and engaging band. One which I think has all the trappings of a successful career – if only people got a chance to hear them outside the Bay Area.

Times are tough for bands, both starting out and veterans – venues are closing at an alarming rate (we can thank COVID for that) and major labels are circling wagons and on life support, it’s incumbent on bands to get support any way they can. Since the big concert halls are getting booked like crazy, it’s almost to the point of getting on a waiting list to go on tour (unless you’re heading to SXSW and then it’s a free-for-all). So what’s left is slogging by other means – going the Social Media and Bandcamp route – merchandising – YouTube – Tik-Tok – anything that gets the message out and grabs an audience in the process.

I confess to doing what I can – music is the glue that holds us all together and we need to support it in anyway we possibly can – wether it’s heading over to a band’s site and cleaning out their swag or buying their entire discography or telling friends -it’s a group effort.

In the case of Dear Banshee – it would be great (for them) if you did all of those. I have no stake in this other than wanting the world to feel nourished and healed by way of music.

So – click on the player and dive in – and after that (or before) click on the link – this one again, if you missed it earlier – Dear Banshee On Spotify and become a fan.

’nuff out of me – enjoy your lunch.
