Carla Bley Trio for this Sunday – recorded at the Grenzenlos Festival in Muranu, Germany on October 12, 2013 and broadcast by RBB Berlin.
I haven’t run across a Carla Bley concert that wasn’t, at the very least, loaded with whimsy and profound joy. Anybody who ever said Jazz was not a place of boundless discovery and emotional kinship had never heard her before – was stuck somewhere in a rut or just didn’t like the spirit of music to begin with.
Perhaps its that freedom that is the essence and spirit of Jazz that causes a head to nod in total agreement to the vibe that permeates these live performances.
Not sure exactly what it is – all I know; I sit down and listen to one of her performances, whether it’s in a group setting or with a big band, I walk away feeling a whole lot better about life than when I walked in. That’s the healing and nurturing quality that makes Music such a vital and essential element to life – Jazz has always been the lovely messenger. And Carla Bley has captured that spirit, embraced it and run with it. That she’s no longer with us doesn’t mean the magic has stopped or even ended – its what makes Music the forever thing. I would like to think, should we not consign our planet to oblivion anytime soon, we will be sustained and nourished by this wonderful energy – not only from Carla Bley but every artist who makes a contribution to adding life to these sometimes shabby earth suits.
Don’t know about you, but I’m not prone to listening to any of her music once and walking away with an ambivalent nod. The music of Carla Bley, and those around her who interpreted her vision compel me to dig deep, put the distractions on hold and dive into the warm and loving reservoir that is there for the listening and the energy.
Yeah, I’m a fan – have been for years. Sharing her music is the least I can do, especially if you aren’t familiar – that’s what I’m here for.
That, and helping you wake up on the right side of the bed – We try to cover all the bases.
Press Play – Enjoy the weekend – work on a peaceful life.
